Common Questions
Get plain-language context before discussing your individual situation.
- What's the difference between MPI, PMI, and MIP?
- Mortgage protection insurance (MPI) protects you and your family. PMI protects the lender and is required when you put less than 20% down. MIP is FHA's version of lender protection and can't be removed. Only MPI pays your family anything.
- Can it cover disability or serious illness?
- Many plans offer riders that pay benefits if you become disabled or are diagnosed with a major illness — ask what's available for your situation.
- Does the coverage have to match my loan?
- No. The right amount depends on your budget, goals, and other coverage. Some families cover the full balance; others cover a few years of payments.
- Is no-underwriting coverage always better?
- Skipping underwriting is convenient, but can mean higher premiums — especially if you're healthy. Comparing both paths usually pays.
